
Is among the most majestic and best preserved gates of the entire circle of the Aurelian walls. Formerly called Porta Ostiensis, because from there began, and still begins today, the Via Ostiense, the road that connects Rome to the ancient port of Ostia. Built in the 3rd century A.D. and structured on two bays, on the sides of the door there are two half-round crenellated towers and inside a small fortification known as “Castelletto” that perhaps housed the garrison that was to defend Rome from invasions. Inside the Museum of the Via Ostiense exhibits important finds which tell the story of the ancient route that connected Rome to Ostia.
